Pokémon GO Has Been Dethroned In The App Store Because It's Poorly Monetized

This week, Pokémon GO ended its 74 day-long reign as the highest grossing app in Apple’s iOS store. It was unseated by an old favorite, Clash Royale, with that game recently introducing new microtransactions, and GO has probably also dropped in part because of its own fading popularity.

But Pokémon GO, despite obviously having peaked, is still a hit on a massive scale, and I believe that much of the reason that GO has been dethroned is because of a simple fact:

It’s actually monetized quite poorly.

Many items do not make for compelling purchases, and only a few offerings feel like true “must-haves.”

I want to go through everything sold in the store and talk about whether or not it’s an effective or ineffective thing for the game to be selling. And I’ll have some ideas for what GO should be selling at the end.

Pokéballs – The relevance of Pokéballs to your style of play depends almost exclupens. I have not once bought Pokéballs, and have thrown away hundreds of them to clear room in my bag. Pokéballs are only a desperation purchase for a select subset of players, making them not a terribly compelling purchase. And at higher levels, when Great and Ultra balls are practically must-haves for high CP capture attempts, regular balls are almost entirely useless.
